5 Reasons Your Hair Is Feeling Rough and Dry

Every woman wants to have soft and healthy locks. When you’re having a ‘good hair’ day, you can’t help but feel feminine and confident. Unfortunately, in the blink of an eye, your ‘fresh-out-the-salon’ hair can start looking rough and dry. Dry hair turns frizzy and brittle, leaving you to turn to hair ties to pull it back and hide the flaws. If you’ve noticed that your hair is feeling rougher and drier than ever, here are some of the reasons for the sudden change:

Changes in Your Body

One of the biggest causes of dryness is physiological changes. When you get pregnant, so much of your hormones are used to help grow the baby in your belly that your scalp might not produce the oils it once did. Birth control and menopause are other causes of brittle hair. Your doctor may be able to recommend a treatment to help you restore your hair’s natural luster.

Your Water Hardness

The last thing you want is a condition referred to as “hard water hair.” Hard water can be an issue in certain cities where mineral build up can be found in the municipal water supply. When you’re washing your hair with hard water, it might feel clumpy and dry. It’s especially noticeable when you’re coming from a soft water city to a hard water city.

One solution would be to purchase a quality water softener from a company like Five Star Plumbing. Water softeners are units that are connected to water heaters and they remove the calcium and magnesium from the water before it hits faucets and fixtures. Once you’re removing these minerals from your faucet, your hair won’t be as dull or dry.

Weather Conditions

As inconvenient as it might be, changes in weather can lead to changes in your hair. In the summer, when you want to wear cute summer dresses and bedazzled sandals, your hair can get dehydrated. In the winter, you go from cold temperatures outdoors to warm inside your home, which can dry out the hair. It’s important to use more moisturizers and more conditioner in these seasons.

The Type of Shampoo You’re Using

Many of the leading brand shampoos contain phosphates. As much as health and beauty companies advertise that their products are designed for dry hair, the ingredients could be doing more harm than good. If you’re using a shampoo that’s stripping your hair of its natural moisture, it will begin to feel brittle.

Styling with Too Much Heat Too Often

Using blow dryers, curlers, and straighteners can be a daily routine for many. Using too many heat styling elements on a regular basis will strip the hair of its oils. When the hair doesn’t have its moisture, it will become damaged. Keep temperatures below 400 degrees or use a wet/dry tool that allows you to style the hair while it’s damp.

Your hair is a different texture when you’re a child and it will be a different texture as you reach different stages in your life. It’s important that you know what can adversely be affecting your locks. Once you know the causes of rough looking hair, you can take the necessary steps to restoring it.
