3 Ways Pop Culture Influences Male Fashion

In another era, if you wore a suit, tie, and a hat you were at the pinnacle of male fashion. Today’s man wants to wear styles reflecting an inner attitude. Here are a few ways pop culture plays a role in creating that style.

The Music Industry Rules the Roost

Music has a long history of fashion influence. The past three decades have seen hip-hop inspire men’s clothing from head to toe. During the 1980’s and 1990’s when music videos were a huge deal and could only be watched on channels like MTV (way before YouTube), viewers would be influenced by the clothing celebrities wore in their videos. For example, sagging pants worn by rappers inspired others to imitate their look. Although this style has come and gone (as many have found it hard to keep their pants from falling down completely), it is still present today.

Many pop stars, such as Justin Bieber, have released their own clothing line. Fans will often flock to wherever they can get their hands on their products. For instance, Beliebers (a fanatic—not just a fan—of Justin Bieber) can look to the brand “Purpose” to add to their fan gear collection.

Brought Geek Style to the Fashion World

The world of techno-geeks invaded men’s clothes and is happy to remain there. Science fiction first brought geeks to the fashion front. Superman’s alter ego made Clark Kent’s thick, black-framed glasses the height of men’s fashion in the 1990s—a fashion statement that is actually making a comeback.

Star Wars gear is standard geek clothing and continues to influence men’s designs. Another nerdy genre that is influencing the fashion world of men is anime. In Japan, you can see this influence in hairstyles. You may even see guys walking around with Dragon Ball Super shirts to show off their nostalgia for their childhood favorite TV show.

As you can see, people all over the world are buy clothing, like that from CC Clothing, that is specifically designed to show off their nerdy interests. It’s no longer all about the preppy-looking shirts or tops with intricate designs. It’s about what your shirt says and the statement that it makes about you too.

Athletic Gear Taking Over

Being fit and healthy is the popular thing to do. In fact, there are many fitness and health-oriented communities (online and offline) for people to become a part of. To show that they’re a part of such a lifestyle, they don’t just work out and participate in athletic events like mud runs or triathlons. No, they show they’re a part of that community through what they wear too.

You can see this through popular shoe brands. Nike and Adidas, for example, are popular shoe brands. Under Armour is well-known for their compression gear and other workout attire too. Yet, people don’t just wear these brands while they’re at the gym. They wear them while doing everyday things as well—like going to work or hanging out with friends. Wearing those brands makes a statement. It says, “I care about my body and fitness is a huge part of my life.”

People are especially attracted to fitness brands that celebrities—such as prominent athletes or actors that are well-known for their dedication to fitness—promote officially or just by wearing. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, for example, is a huge promoter of the Under Armour brand. If you follow him on Instagram, he is always posting about his workout sessions that he does while wearing the gear and during the photo shoots that the brand does with him.

Take a look at your wardrobe and analyze how your exposure to pop culture has influenced it. You might not even realize that your clothing choices were influenced like that, but it’s interesting to make the connections once you take the time to do so.
